Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo applied intense pressure, but they were unsuccessful in breaking through. Ultimately, passion triumphed over talent as Youssef En-goal Nesyri's was enough to advance Morocco by a score of 1-0.
With the victory, Morocco became the first country from Africa to get to the semifinals of a FIFA World Cup, surpassing three other countries that narrowly missed it.
The Moroccan defense grabbed control after En-Nesyri towered high in the sky to head home just before halftime and stifled the Portugal threat for the whole 90 minutes. Ronaldo started the game on the sidelines, with Fernando Santos once again selecting Goncalo Ramos in the attack, but the Portugal manager resorted to his seasoned captain soon before halftime.
In the end, it had little impact since Ronaldo blew his one decent chance to alter the game later. Rafael Leao was the real burst of offensive flair, but he arrived too late to affect the final score.
In the meanwhile, Moroccan midfielders Sofiane Boufal and Azzedine Ounahi were instrumental in the game's outcome, and backup defender Yahia Attiyat Allah also made a significant contribution. Even though Morocco's captain Romain Saiss suffered an injury in the second half and replacement Walid Cheddira was dismissed in stoppage time, the African country's shape and organization remained unaffected. Yassine Bounou, the goalie, was also outstanding, making a series of tremendous saves to preserve the clean sheet and guarantee qualifying.
